We call it “Salvaged Décor from the Middle Kingdom” – antique and vintage pieces that add a unique touch of ultra cool “Old China” to any contemporary space.
CHINESE FURNITURE. It has been around for thousands of years. At Wu & McHugh we focus on vernacular pieces from the late Qing era (1840-1911) up to the 1950’s.

THE PEOPLES FURNITURE. We lean towards pieces that have lived in a family household for hundreds of years as they embody a rugged warmth that can’t be found with newer pieces. Pieces that were broken, repaired, replaced, and rejigged for the demands of daily life. Pieces that rang in the New China, survived the Cultural Revolution, and were eventually replaced by modern furnishings that represented the new economic power that China was to become. Pieces that truly characterize the People’s Furniture.
WABI-SABI - WE KEEP IT ORIGINAL. Wabi-Sabi is the art of finding perfection in imperfection. The pieces you will find in our store are not in pristine restored condition for a reason! We keep them as we find them because we love that rough sense of beauty that only a piece of history can portray! We want them to show their age, to show what they have been through, and that they were a witness to history!
WE PICK IT OURSELVES. We love the visual contrast that is created when combining “Old China” furniture & decor with contemporary design. That’s why we travel to China and handpick the pieces ourselves!
