IT’S THE PEOPLES FURNITURE

Chinese furniture has been around for thousands of years. At Wu & McHugh Inc. we focus on vernacular pieces from the late Qing era (1840-1911). Pieces that have lived in a family household for hundreds of years. Pieces that were broken, repaired, replaced, and rejigged for the demands of daily life. Pieces that rang in the New China, survived the Cultural Revolution, and were eventually replaced by modern furnishings that represented the new economic power that China was to become. Pieces that truly characterize the People’s Furniture.

WE PICK IT OURSELVES

WE LOVE THIS STUFF! And we love the look that can be created when combining old China with modern design.
That’s why we travel to China and handpick the pieces.

WE KEEP IT ORIGINAL

The pieces you will find in our store are not in pristine restored condition for a reason! We keep them as we find them because we love that rough sense of beauty that only a piece of history can portray! We want them to show their age, to show what they have been through, and that they were a witness to history!

OUR CHARITY

We support the UNDP program Her Entrepreneurship Plan - Empowering Ethnic Minority Women for Cultural Industrial Development through Community-based Approach, a project aiming to empower ethnic minority women from Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture Yunnan Province by harnessing their traditional skills and crafts. You can find their beautiful handcrafts at our store. All proceeds from the sales of these handcrafts go to this project.

MEET MIKI WU & JOHN MCHUGH

Miki is originally from Shandong province, China while John moved to China in 1997 with work. They met in Beijing in 2006 at a friend’s impromptu Halloween party and have been together ever since. They have travelled the world together, built a family together, and developed a love of old Chinese furniture together. Now they have decided to share their passion with others.
